This powerful book cannot be described as pleasure reading as the subject matter is too painful and sad, but the skill of Alice Sebold's writing is to tell a distressing tale with insight and empathy. The characterts are each effected by the death of the teeneage storyteller Susie Salmon in different ways, and each travels their own route in dealing with the aftermath, some with success and others not.
That such a harrowing opening can turn into this wonderful , uplifting and at times even funny read is amazing. This book is a keeper. We consume books throughout our life but some, the great ones, will stay with you forever. The Lovely Bones is one of those.
