Communities on 24 June, 2009 - 22:30
To me this book is about building communities. It describes a group of women, individually at first, factually and one dimensionally. As the book progresses, the behind the scenes portions of their lives are revealed and the characters start to interact. At first, the slowness, the lack of action annoyed me. I plodded through until I realised the truth this natural progression.
The central point for these characters, the hub of their interactions is the knitting club and the yarn store in which the group meets. While some characters enter the club with no interest in knitting and it would appear they cannot become part of the community, slowly they do.
Thinking this book was light, I took it with me to read and finish while taking an extremely long bath one evening as I suffered through a miserable cold. By this time the characters had been developed vividly and relationships knitted together strongly, so when the story took a hard turn to the real realities of life, I finished it in streams of tears.
A truthful and entertaining story depcting how we come to be part of each others lives.
