Hi everyone in Bookland

Hi There

Another newbie here, I have been busy working on my bookshelf, getting there slowly!

I'm Sylvia, based in Melbourne, my tastes are pretty eclectic, but I like a lot of modern and classic fiction/literature, especially Australian and Asian literature and non fiction (current events/pop culture). Not really a sci fi/fantasy fan though!

The Japanese book group does sound interesting. At the moment I am ploughing my way through Shantaram - well worth the effort as I an enjoying it thoroughly :)

Welcome Sylvia. Hope you enjoy this wonderful site.

I must say I'm surprised there are so many of you that enjoy Japanese related fiction. I'm looking forward to sharing and learning with you all via the book club.

I haven't selected a book for us to start with as yet. I thought I would wait for Jeremy to install a discussion type module on the book clubs section so we can all have some input as far as selections go. I'm told we don't have long to wait. :)

George

I've heard great things about Books Kinokuniya but have never had the chance to visit the store! It's something I must do if I get up to Sydney again in the near future :)

I am a big fan of Banana Yoshimoto, I have just ordered Hardboiled/Hardluck and am awaiting it's arrival with much anticipation!

Thanks Coral, will keep that

Thanks Coral, will keep that in mind! Banana Yoshimoto is actually a female author - she writes contemporary fiction - some of it is realism, other times it has a bit of a fantasy aspect to it as well. Ironically, the first time I read one of her short stories was in a class based on Australian fiction - strange huh?

Here is a pretty detailed description from wikipedia -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_Yoshimoto

It's a good introduction to the author and her novels.

KittyK, thanks for the link

KittyK, thanks for the link & smack me for getting the gender wrong. I wonder if her books are in the same vein as writers like Murukami & Ishiguro - both wonderful authors.
