Haruki Murakami - After Dark

Posted by Jane Eyre on 18 December, 2007 - 13:09

Hi

I was wondering whether anyone out there has read this and might be able to help me as I'm not quite sure I understand it.

Was Murakami trying to tell us that the entire plot was basically a dream of Mari or her sister? Although I enjoyed the book, I have to say I was a little confused with the ending

Understanding it...

I really like Murakami; he’s possibly my favorite writer of the moment.

I understand your feelings about the book.

In approaching Murakami’s work, it’s often necessary to suspend conventional expectations of finding resolution to the story.

Sometimes there is no clear resolution on the page. The only resolution you find is the one you construct for yourself.

It can be a struggle as we all look for certainty. We find ambiguity frustrating. But this cuts to the heart of Murakami’s work.

In life, dreams or experiences meaning is always subjective. It’s always contingent on what you a feeling, thinking or doing at the time. Very few things in life are definitive.

What is really happening and what you think is happening can be very different.

The way you view things over time also changes.

What may seem certain now may change in 5 minutes or 5 years.

What is real, what is imagined, is all arbitrary. Life is characterized by a fluid ambiguity.

Murakami sees the world like this.

Embracing Murakami’s work requires understanding and accepting this.

But this is simply my point of view.

Cheers

Ravi
