Betwixt by Tarah Bray Smith: Hachette Livre

Betwixt by Tarah Bray Smith: Hachette Livre

Gripping and edgy - Betwixt is a dark journey into the troubled lives of a group of teenagers brought together by the strange powers they develop.

Beautiful Morgan D'Amici wakes in her trailerpark home with dirt and blood under her fingernails. Paintings come alive under Ondine Mason's violet-eyed gaze. Haunted runaway Nix Saint-Michael sees halos of light around people about to die. At a secret summer rave, the three teenagers learn of their true, changeling nature and their uncertain, intertwined destinies. Riveting, unflinching, beautiful, BETWIXT shows a magic as complex and challenging as any ordinary truth.

The buzz around Betwixt...

'A pleasure' Elle;

'Piercingly evoked... potent' New York Times;

'Smith writes with grace of the contradictions of childhood; the confusing rages and humiliations; the longing for order; the delicate pleasures; the misunderstandings occasioned by innocence' Vogue

Fans of Heroes, Skins, The Craft and The Lost Boys will love Betwixt. The book was a launch title on Headline's Teen Fiction list.

Write a Review
By: LeBard at 13 August, 2008 - 22:12

Hello Booktaggers,

We think free books are great, we've been very grateful for the free books we've received from Publishers. I hope you are too :). If you've received a free book please write a review for it. We all want to know what you thought of the book (and it was a condition of receipt).

To write a review hover over the book and select Book info. Then on the Books profile page select Write a review from the menu next to the book image.

I look forward to hearing what you think of the books you've been reading lately.

Kind Regards,

Jeremy

My impressions of Betwixt
By: Obsidiantears83 at 7 July, 2008 - 13:49

I actually really enjoyed this book. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I was in I was hooked. I grew up on fairy tales of changelings, and have read a lot of fantasy - and a lot of Urban Fantasy (Charles de Lint etc) so this was right up my alley. I loved the characters, the way they developed and their interactions. It was a very edgy and gritty teen story of coming of age and emancipation. My only annoyance was the ending!

Betwixt was one of the strangest books I’ve read in a while
By: bilibub at 7 July, 2008 - 13:22

The characters took me back to my high school creative writing, when everyone who was young was beautiful and clean but in inner turmoil. The plot, barely even hinted at early on, is abruptly thrust upon the reader, and then completely overworked. The old sales adage applies – if you confuse them you lose them. The ending of the book comes upon you as abruptly as the plot and is almost missing, as if the author ran out of pages – there is neither the cliffhanger necessary for a second book, nor the satisfying end required to bring closure.

Review: Betwixt
By: jac123books at 24 June, 2008 - 13:42

I found the book an extremely slow read. The story was uninspiring and I could not wait to finish it. The characters were shallow and not very well developed in my opinion.
Thanks for sending the book anyway.

My thoughts on Betwixt
By: ESalkild at 27 May, 2008 - 09:28

Betwixt is a page turner with twists and turns (although some were bordering on cliche), which gave it a good forward motion. It was not particularly fraught with intrigue but there were a few good moments of suspense.

I think one of the themes of the novel would be "things aren't always as they seem" and the supernatural aspects were unique and originally plotted out. The characters weren't exceptionally developed, or if they were it was through exposition, but they were interesting and I did get a sense of caring about them or disliking them.
